It is a form of distance education that uses the Internet, email, and learning management systems to create a virtual classroom. Traditional instruction and online instruction have advantages and disadvantages, and each is appropriate for different learning situations. In many cases, the advantages of online learning include its flexibility, its ability to bring together learners from many different places, and its lack of a classroom setting.

The treatment of substance use disorders is a controversial topic but one that is much needed. Laws are being enacted by all 50 states and the federal government to address the issue. Although these state laws vary, most prohibit the use of alcohol and other substances on school property, define the scope of permissible use (e.g., drinking alcohol on school property is allowed only on school premises during school hours), and provide for some form of enforcement (e.g., suspension for first-time drinkers).

The neurobiological model of addiction proposes that the addicted brain is not a homogeneous entity, but has a number of alternative neural circuits that are independently activated by stimuli. For example, in an earlier study, Stanley was able to show that people addicted to cocaine or heroin would often turn to alcohol or other substances to reduce their cravings or simply to get high. Awareness of these types of “craving substitution” behaviors and of the natural history of these behaviors can be an important first step in the treatment of addiction.
